OPEN WORLD PROGRAM HONORS NEW MEXICANS FOR EXCEPTIONAL EFFORTS IN CONSTITUENT DIPLOMACY

WASHINGTON, DC – The Open World Leadership Center, the Congress’s own agency working to increase U.S.-Eurasian understanding and partnerships, will host an award ceremony at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 30 in the Governor’s Mansion in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The event celebrates the exceptional support to the Open World program and the Congress by its New Mexican hosts from the Santa Fe Council on International Relations, the Albuquerque/Ashgabat Sister Cities Committee, and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Albuquerque.

Russian delegation gets whirlwind tour of NM economy

A popular Russian proverb goes something like this: If only I knew where I was going to fall, I’d lay down some straw there ahead of time.

Russians had no more inkling than the rest of the world that the financial collapse was coming, but they were spiritually prepared, said Vladimir Yuskov through a translator.

“We’ve been in crisis for 20 years, ever since Perestroika,” he said, referring to the late 1980s social and economic reforms led by Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Open World delegation meets with Congressman Lujan


Sunday, February 21 - Santa Fe, NM Open World delegation from Siberia, Russia meets with Congressman Lujan at the Santa Fe, New Mexico office. The Open World delegation here in New Mexico to learn, share, and explore our land of enchantment had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Lujan and his staff yesterday.


Today the delegation will meet with the director of the Santa Fe Habitat for Humanity then visit a construction site. In the afternoon they will receive a welcome from the Mayor of Santa Fe followed by a visit with SCORE and the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce.

Sightseeing set for Sunday

Sunday, February 21st 2010, The Open World delegation will visit the Plaza in Santa Fe, NM this morning. The delegation from Siberia are here in New Mexico to learn and exchange ideas through their visits with local and state organizations in the field of Economic Development with emphasis on accountable governance.
In recent years Russia has started implementing local self-governance reforms that expand the number of municipalities and give local authorities both more autonomy and more responsibility for providing basic public services. As a result, new and established local governments are confronted with the following needs: to hire and train staff, take on new budgeting,planning, and service-delivery responsibilities, promote local business development, and become more proactive, responsive, and accountable.
